The plot of the 1952 film "The Thing" was adapted from the short story by John W. Campbell Jr. of the same name, but the latter adaptation was closer in concept to the 1951 short story "Who Goes There?" than the film. Campbell's short story was first published in the July–August 1948 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. The 1950 film "The Thing" had a production budget of $927,388, and was the first in a sequence of films produced by 20th Century Fox, beginning with the 1948 film noir "The Big Sleep" and the 1951 film noir "Mystery Street". The 1953 film The Thing from Another World was the first in a series of films based on the character of John Carpenter, beginning with the science fiction film Dark Star (1974), which he produced and wrote the screenplay for, and continuing with Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), They Live (1988) and Big Trouble in Little China (1986). The 1967 science fiction film The Spy with a Cold Nose is a film noir version of the plot of John W. Campbell Jr.'s "Who Goes There?" The 1983 film The Thing has a production budget of $17,566,000 (over $30 million in 2018 dollars) and was the first in a series of films based on the character of John Carpenter, beginning with the film science fiction film Dark Star (1974), which he produced and wrote the screenplay for, and continuing with Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), They Live (1988), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Christine (1983), Ghosts of Mars (2001), The Thing from Another World (2002) and The Thing (2011). The 2012 graphic novel The Thing is a science fiction retelling of the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?", written by Charlie Jane Anders. Characters Mary Lee's husband, John The secondary characters include: Mary Lee, the character played by a real person in the original version of the story: Although Mary Lee's name is always misspelled "Maryl" in the later versions, this is in homage to Mary MacLane, the fictional character played by Kay Francis in the 1950 film version of the story.
